  5. Definitions for Faith, Belief, Believe, Trust and Hope.

Faith-Complete trust or confidence in someone or something. (Matthew 17:20
He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.)

Belief:An acceptance that a statement is true or that something exists. (So belief cometh of hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ. Romans 10:17)

Believe:Accepting something as true. (For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. – John 3:16)

Trust: Firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. (Jeremiah 17:7 But blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in him.)

Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen.(Jeremiah 29:11
"For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.")

In my opinion none of these words mean the same thing. Belief and Believe come close but as I sit and read them belief says an acceptance and believe says accepting. Accepting is what the person is doing but acceptance is that you already accepted it. Even though the definition of faith has the word trust in it I still don't believe they are the same thing. I use to think they were the same thing because you can lose faith and lose trust. But they are different because trust is firm belief and faith is complete trust. Hope stands out far from any of these definitions because the definition of hope is no where near any of the other words.

  6. Faith : taking complete confidence in something or someone [Matthew 17:20]

Believe : agreeing that something is true [Exodus 4:30-31]

Belief : something you think is true [2 Thessalonians 2:13]

Trust : relying on [Deuteronomy 1:31-33]

Hope : wanting/expecting something to happen [Job 6:10-12]

I think that all these terms are all related, they all go hand in hand. However, in some contexts some don't connect with each other. For example, You might trust something that you don't put hope in for or maybe you don't hope for what you believe.

Believe- Agreeing something is true.(Proverbs 14:15)

Trust- To rely on someone/something.(Job 8:14)
Hope- Wanting or expecting something to happen.(Psalm 25:5)

I don't feel like any of terms are the same, although they may sound similar none of them mean the same thing. Although the words may go hand in hand, they don't have the same meanings.

  8. Faith- Complete trust or confidence in someone or something. (Genesis 48:15)
Believe- Accept (something) as true; feel sure of the truth. (Genesis 15:6)
Belief- Something one accepts as true or real; a firmly held opinion or conviction. (2 Thessalonians 2:13)
Trust- Firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. (Psalm 13:5)
Hope- A feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. (1 Chronicles 29:15)

Between all five of these definitions, hope stands out the most. While the other four all have concrete, solid opinions, Hope is based on wants and expectancies that might not come into fruition.

  11. Faith: accepting something without proof; a lack of doubt. [Matthew 14:31]
Believe: accept something as being true. [Proverbs 14:15]
Belief: something accepted as being true. [2 Thessalonians 2:13]
Trust: putting confidence that something will not fail you. [Isaiah 12:2]
Hope: expectation of something favorable [Isaiah 40:31]

These words all go together, because they all deal with accepting something or having confidence in something without being absolutely certain. However, while these terms are similar, the only ones that are essentially the same are “believe” and “belief”; “believe” is the verb form and “belief” is the noun.

Trust- To believe someone or something and believe that you can rely on the someone/something. ~Proverbs 3:5

Hope- To look forward to a good result, to wish for a certain result. ~ Psalms 71:5

I think that belief and to believe are the same. The rest though I think are different, although they are connected. Faith is different from these because faith is more of a religious belief. I think trust is different because it's more of relying and putting faith into someone/something. And hope I think is the most different, because it's not a certainty, you can't fully put faith into hope, the rest of these you can fully believe.

    ~Commit your way to the LORD;
trust in him and he will do this:
He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn,
your vindication like the noonday sun. Psalm 37:4-6

hope- the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best.
~For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have? But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. Romans 8:24,25
